Valnet Acquires Premium Gaming Publication Polygon from Vox Media
MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On April 28, 2025, in McGucken v. Valnet Inc., Case No. 24-1040, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider a photographer’s challenge to a Ninth Circuit decision affirming dismissal of his copyright infringement claims against Valnet. The Supreme Court’s rejection of the certiorari petition marks the end of the road for photographer Elliot McGucken, whose claims and arguments against Valnet were rejected first by Judge Josephine L. Staton of the Central District of California in January of 2024, and then again by the Ninth Circuit panel last year.
The case involved the applicability of the “server test,” which insulates website operators from liability for copyright infringement when photographs are not “stored” on their servers, but rather are “embedded” on their websites. In 2023, McGucken filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against leading digital media publisher, Valnet, for embedding his photographs in various articles on Valnet’s publication, TheTravel.com. McGucken filed and pursued his lawsuit against Valnet despite binding authority holding that such conduct cannot give rise to copyright infringement. In line with such authority, the district court dismissed the case and the Ninth Circuit affirmed the dismissal, both siding with Valnet on all accounts.
Given the ubiquitous practice of embedding online and the broad implications of this case, Valnet garnered support from high-profile amici who filed briefs supporting its positions. These organizations included Google, Pinterest, the Wikimedia Foundation, the Organization for Transformative Works, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Computer & Communications Industry Association, the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Authors Alliance.
The continued viability of the “server test” represents an important win for many industries which disseminate information online, furthering the goals of both copyright law and the Internet.

CAE Named Canada’s Top Defence Company for 2025

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Allard Prize for International Integrity, one of the world's leading anti-corruption prizes, has announced the finalists for the 2025 Allard Prize. The Award Ceremony will take place on June 17, 2025, at New York City’s Tribeca Rooftop, where the Allard Prize winner will receive a $100,000 CAD prize.
This year’s honorees are extraordinary individuals whose efforts have opposed corruption, illuminated truth, and advanced justice in some of the world’s most challenging environments. Allard Prize Announces 2025 Award Finalists
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Postmedia Network Canada Corp. (“Postmedia” or the “Company”) today released financial information for the three and six months ended February 28, 2025.

Second Quarter Operating Results
Revenue for the quarter was $110.8 million as compared to $97.3 million in the same period in the prior year, representing an increase of $13.5 million (13.9%). The revenue increase was primarily due to increases in advertising revenue of $6.9 million (16.0%), circulation revenue of $2.2 million (6.6%) and other revenue of $4.8 million (67.4%), partially offset by decreases in parcel revenue of $0.4 million (2.9%). Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, advertising revenue for the quarter increased by 6.0% and other revenue for the quarter increased by 47.7%.
Total operating expenses excluding depreciation, amortization and restructuring decreased $1.1 million, or 1.1%, for the quarter ended February 28, 2025, relative to the same period in the prior year. The decrease relates to decreases in compensation, newsprint, distribution and other operating expenses, partially offset by an increase in production expense. Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, total operating expenses excluding depreciation, amortization and restructuring decreased $12.0 million or 11.7%.
Operating income before depreciation, amortization and restructuring in the quarter was $9.8 million, an increase of $14.6 million relative to the same period in the prior year. The increase in operating income before depreciation, amortization and restructuring is due to a decrease in operating expenses excluding depreciation, amortization and restructuring including an increase in total revenues. Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, operating income before depreciation, amortization and restructuring in the quarter was $7.3M.
Net loss in the quarter ended February 28, 2025 was $16.0 million, as compared to a net loss of $20.1 million in the same period in the prior year. The decrease in net loss was primarily the result of a decrease in depreciation, amortization, restructuring, net financing expense, including an increase in total revenues and gains on disposal of assets held for sale and other assets, partially offset by an increase in interest expense, foreign currency exchange losses and losses on derivative financial instruments.
Year to Date Operating Results
Revenue for the six months ended February 28, 2025 was $220.1 million as compared to $202.0 million in the same period in the prior year, representing an increase of $19.1 million (9.5%). The revenue increase was primarily due to increases in advertising revenue of $12.5 million (13.3%), circulation revenue of $5.5 million (8.5%), other revenue of $1.1 million (7.4%), partially offset by decreases in parcel revenue of $0.1 million (0.2%). Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, advertising revenue for the six months ended February 28, 2025 increased by 3.5%.
Total operating expenses excluding depreciation, amortization and restructuring decreased $5.0 million, or 2.5%, for the six months ended February 28, 2025, relative to the same period in the prior year. The decrease relates to decreases in newsprint and production expenses, partially offset by an increase in distribution and other operating expenses. Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, total operating expenses excluding depreciation, amortization and restructuring decreased $16.7 million or 8.3%.
Operating income before depreciation, amortization and restructuring for the six months ended February 28, 2025 was $15.3 million, an increase of $14.2 million relative to the same period in the prior year. The increase in operating income before depreciation, amortization and restructuring is due to an increase in total revenues, partially offset by an increase in operating expenses excluding depreciation, amortization, impairment and restructuring. Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, operating income before depreciation, amortization and restructuring in the six months ended February 28, 2025 was $10.5 million.
Net loss in the six months ended February 28, 2025 was $40.5 million, as compared to a net loss of $30.7 million in the same period in the prior year. The increase in net loss was primarily the result of an increase in interest expense, foreign currency exchange losses and losses on derivative financial instruments, partially offset by a decrease in depreciation, amortization, restructuring, net financing expense and an increase in gains on disposal of assets held for sale and other assets.

The groundbreaking report reveals critical insights into how evolving listener habits, industry fragmentation, and ambiguity in podcast definitions are affecting podcasting's future growth and commercial viability.
Despite podcasting's rise as a multi-billion-dollar industry with enormous cultural influence, the study identifies a significant identity crisis driven by the convergence of audio-only content and video formats popularized by platforms like YouTube and Spotify. According to the new data:
- 72% of Americans 12+ consider recordings of people discussing any topic on YouTube that are also available as audio-only shows elsewhere to be a podcast.
- Advertisers face significant barriers to investment due to inconsistent standards, fragmented reporting, and unclear attribution.
- A clear, shared definition and interoperable measurement are urgently needed to realize podcasting’s full economic potential.

The white paper synthesizes extensive research, including a nationally representative survey of over 4000 people (conducted by Edison Research), qualitative interviews with listeners, and insights from over 30 leading industry executives featured on Oxford Road’s Media Roundtable podcast series. The report proposes new working definitions:
- Podcast (noun): "An on-demand audio-driven program featuring episodic content across wide-ranging themes and formats. Traditionally delivered via open RSS and conversational in nature, it can include platform-based distribution and is commonly supplemented by video."
- Video Podcast (noun): "An episodic, on-demand program centered on spoken-word content, where synchronized visuals meaningfully shape the experience."
The research underscores that resolving definitional ambiguity and measurement inconsistency could unlock billions of dollars in advertiser investment. To address these challenges, the paper calls for an industry-wide collaboration to develop an Open Measurement Protocol for Podcasting, advocating for interoperable, privacy-safe measurement standards and clear taxonomy across all platforms.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mainichi Broadcasting System, Inc. announced in partnership with ADN, GKIDS, and Muse a global theatrical premiere for the second season of the smash-hit anime series DAN DA DAN. In celebration of DAN DA DAN’s return, the global theatrical rollout, released as DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE, outside of Japan, begins on May 30th from Muse in Asia, in North American theaters on June 6th from GKIDS, and in European theaters from ADN on June 7th. The series begins streaming worldwide this July.
The critically lauded and wildly popular show returns for a new chapter, following the first season’s conclusion in December 2024. With production from the acclaimed animation studio Science SARU (DEVILMAN crybaby, Inu-Oh, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), the series’ second season is co-directed by Fuga Yamashiro, director of the first season, and longtime Science SARU veteran Abel Gongora, who directed the highly acclaimed opening theme animation of the series’ first season. Composer kensuke ushio (Chainsaw Man, DEVILMAN crybaby) returns to the production for the score.
The first season of DAN DA DAN was a global breakout series of 2024. The blistering and genre-bending sci-fi comedy romance garnered widespread critical and audience acclaim for its fantastic animation, sharp writing, and endearing characters. The first season’s opening theme song “Otonoke” from the hit duo Creepy Nuts became a social media phenomenon, maintaining record-breaking run at No. 1 for 20 weeks on the Billboard Global Japan Songs list. DAN DA DAN is a television adaptation of author Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga of the same name, which is currently serialized in the wildly popular “Shonen Jump Plus” by SHUEISHA, under the globally beloved Shonen Jump imprint. Yukinobu Tatsu previously worked as an assistant to acclaimed author Tatsuki Fujimoto on his global hit series “Chainsaw Man” and “Fire Punch,” and Yuji Kaku on “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku.” The original manga series recently crossed 10 million in sales, more than doubling its circulation following the global success of animated series.
Worldwide Theatrical Premiere Release
In celebration of the return of DAN DA DAN, the theatrical premiere, releasing as DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE, kicks off the thrillingly eerie EVIL EYE arc, which began in the last episode of the first season. The DAN DA DAN: EVIL EYE theatrical event screens last season’s start of the EVIL EYE arc, along with the first three episodes of the new second season, in addition to an exclusive interview with series co-directors Fuga Yamashiro and Abel Gongora. The global theatrical rollout will cover over 50 countries and regions. Further release details will be announced in collaboration with the theatrical premiere partners in each region.

“DAN DA DAN” the Breakout Hit Anime of 2024 Returns for Season Two
